A Variation Of The Chinese Embassy

Project details

Programme
Unit UG14
Year 3

The project is situated within the distribution market in Blok 70, which was destroyed by a fire in 2021. Blok 70 market is seen as a ‘Chinatown'. Conceptions of Chinatowns are constructions of difference between Serbians and Chinese migrants. The status of Chinese migrants draws parallels to the market as both bring associations of the temporary. Mirroring the notion of the temporary, the programme of a hostel is proposed, with a ceramic workshop aiming to draw in visitors, facilitating cultural exchange.

As the market can be seen to portray a poor image of China, the building serves as a counterpoint to it. Blok 70 is commonly associated with low-quality, mass-manufactured plastic goods from China. Besides, concerns about plastic waste have long plagued the country. Ceramics are thus seen as the opposite of the ubiquitous and locally found plastic products. The building incorporates both recycled plastic and ceramics, aiming to facilitate a dialogue between the two distinct materials. The novel way of recycling plastic aims to reverse expectations of what plastics can mean, and the building itself hence becomes an embassy.

Press Moulding with Plastic

Press Moulding with Plastic

To form a dialogue between the two materials, plastic is used in the tile-making process as a mould.

The Workshop

The workshop has equipment for both pottery making and plastic recycling. With the workshop in place, the building forms a part of a larger recycling network.
