The Lozionica Jazz Hub inserts itself into an abandoned and unused train depot in Old Belgrade. The programme responds to the need for a cultural centre in the area, to attract tourists. Primarily a Jazz performance space, the building also includes back-of-house mobile set design workshops, rehearsal spaces for choreographed performances and lounge spaces for musicians and guests.
The first band to bring Jazz into Belgrade during the times of the old Yugoslavia was the Micky Jazz Orchestra. The design is driven by the regular rhythm of the orchestra's most famous song ’Sejenca’; concrete columns act as the rhythm alongside the existing building structure, and the steel roofing and mobile building segments act as the improvisation element of the Jazz piece. This methodology is complemented by the material pallet of the abandoned trains on-site, and intuitive drawings to help create spaces in an organic and ‘improvisational’ way drawing inspiration from Jackson Pollock.
Overall, the building aims to create a cultural centre for Old Belgrade, with an ode to the years in which Jazz was a new and exciting phenomenon entering Belgrade before the War.
