This project aims to create a national archive that represents Serbia through its national drink, rakija. Serbians have pride in their Rakija and every family has their own homemade recipe, many of them being passed down through generations.
The project's location is the former National Library of Serbia, which was bombed during World War Two and contains the essence of a library and an archive. Different households and regions across the country are encouraged to bring small quantities of their fermented fruits, distil them in the Fruit Archive, and age them in the cask storage space. As they put the casks in storage, they can record their family name, region and their specific recipe. These are then archived along with the rakija.
As the building represents the whole country, the shape of the building is developed from map diagrams of Serbia. The materials and the roof shapes are developed from the vernacular architecture, which hopes to bring the connection to the rural farming roots of the nation and provide the sense of slowness and peace that Belgrade is longing for.
