Celebrating Seasonality through Connection to Place
Plaw Hatch Farm: a small biodynamic farm situated at the junction of agriculture and forestry. The project draws on the forest to harness fire’s heat and smoke and the farm’s garden for vegetables. These elements are combined in a program that seeks to preserve our relationship with the agricultural and seasonal environment through celebration of the seasons. Fermentation and smoking preserve the farm’s produce in a performative process that is both a space for performance and celebration. The spaces are enclosed in the impermeable and permeable elements of filigree steel and solid clay. The metal’s simple form conceals the poetic structures clad in clay dug, fired and glazed onsite.
The roof form was developed through both digital and physical experiments.
Columns provide spaces for smoking and fermentation. The forms represent roots, leaves, flowers and fruit.
Kitchen and green room for vegetable preparation.
The building also acts as a space for performance and gathering.
