The factory creates an opportunity to support the new settlement by utilising the mineral-rich chalk groundwater of the River Glaven. The factory sits on the seaward side of the protective berm, equidistant from the tidal port and market, and the gin distillery, pub and botanical gardens. The site’s position on the edge of the town square nurtures the importance of an industrial process with community engagement.
The Infused Room is located beneath the embankment, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings. Approaching from the town square, the public enters a covered platform overlooking a raised water table mirroring and skyscape, with views beneath that connect the infusion process with the Cley tidal marshlands beyond. The glass-blowing studio stands as a rhetorical structure, hovering above as a glowing transparent beam with a Corten core.
The glassblowing studio is enclosed in a transparent skin, allowing the public to witness the art of glassblowing and the glassblowing artists to overlook the Cley marshes.
The factory workers and glassblowing artists access the building through the Corten core.
