The project is a celebration of the diversity of indigenous Guyanese architecture and will display vernacular architecture techniques such as thatch. Indigenous South American architecture has informed much of what we know about architecture today, yet the Western world tends to criticise and stigmatise this type of vernacular architecture. It is often described as ‘primitive’ and ‘uncivilised’, whilst European architecture is hailed as ‘modern’ and ‘progressive’. This museum will therefore not only exhibit indigenous Guyanese architecture but also demonstrate what can be achieved using these techniques in order to teach their application more generally.
