The concept of ‘supernatural’ delves into the way we engage with, learn from, and celebrate natural materials. In the context of architecture, how can we involve nature to an extent that goes beyond the ordinary and becomes ‘supernatural’?

This project focuses on the use of local timber as a building material and critically examines the challenges faced by the construction industry. The research methodology takes an iterative approach, with each chapter addressing conventional problems and presenting solutions discovered through a series of experiments.

The project not only addresses environmental concerns but also explores the social aspects of our interaction with timber. With the logging industry heavily reliant on machinery to process timber into standardised building materials, traditional woodworking knowledge is increasingly forgotten. This research aims to bridge the gap between timber and amateur woodworkers, allowing for optimal construction through the use of augmented reality technology and enabling individuals without professional training to learn.

Proposed Plan and Section

The drawing explores the building on various scales in long and short sections. It shows how moments of augmented reality (AR) and technical details feed into the outcome of the final space.

Fragment Collection

A collection of iterative fragmental spaces that respond to each innovative timber construction method.

Programmatic Viewpoints

Programmatic Viewpoints

The slideshow shows the atmospheric quality of each functional space.

Interior View

An interior viewpoint showing the communal spaces where visitors take part in the construction. These shared hallways are the link between each functional space and have seating spaces to encourage social interactions.

Technical

Technical

Demonstrating the process of using augmented reality (AR) as an iterative design tool as well as physical tests that have led to the final design resolution.
