Acton is an area of West London, England. It is now principally residential, though it maintains some light industry. Recently, the area has worked to create a high-quality, attractive physical environment for local residents.
The Hope Seed Bank undertakes a retrofit of an existing historical building located between the residential and working areas in East Acton to create a safe space for storing seeds of endangered UK plants. It also serves as an exhibition space to educate people about the storage methods of plants and their endangered status, thus fostering awareness of ecological conservation.
Central to the seed bank is the temperature design of seed storage. This is manifest in terms of spatial arrangement, sunshade, ventilation, energy saving and power outage strategy while allowing visual interactions with visitors to stimulate interest in seeds. A leisurely terrace area provides space for visitors to gather, relax and eat.
Future impact is key to the Hope Seed Bank as it seeks to grow with the new generation, helping Acton to become a commercial and residential centre, thus making a difference to the world.
A natural temperature separation is formed by surrounding the storage area, with exhibition areas and staff areas.
The exterior and interior of the building enclose the main storage space to provide natural temperature isolation, while the seeds are normally stored underground to provide a stable and low-consumption storage environment.

Shadings are provided by the specimen glass while intriguing visitors to explore the space through the specimens.
