A Human's Nest

Project details

Programme
Unit UG7
Year 2

Upon encountering an inclined triangular green space, I noticed it was inhabited by three crows and realised the lack of human care or interaction with the site. This project makes use of the green space to unite surrounding residents’ gardens, proposing a community centre where people can bring their own produce to cook for their community. The community centre’s programme would be centred on inclusivity and ease of access, with the inclusion of wheelchair-accessible toilets an integral part of the design. The building would also be equipped with a community kitchen and café, a library, meeting room spaces and a roof garden. All of these spaces are accessed by narrow entrances that mimic the entrance and protection a bird’s nest provides. The building’s façade is predominantly made of wooden shingles that blend in with the surrounding brickwork, similar to how a bird’s nest does to the tree it inhabits. I designed enclosed modular spaces which I refer to as ‘nests’. The modular nests have yurt-like roofing with twigs intertwined on top that match the canopies of the surrounding trees. Through these nests, a community can thrive, and the once-underused green space can be occupied.
