The proposal focuses on the notion of a hybridised architecture, one constructed both physically and digitally. An architecture that is focused on the production of digital outputs through the navigation of physical inputs.
The design explores the use of the facade/skin of a structure as a new medium for production, through the deployment of the conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) pix2pix. The ‘labels’ (training images) will be anamorphically projected across the festival and each viewer (wearing a live-converting VR headset) will become integrated in the process of reconstructing these labels. Their reconstruction will convert imagery of the site’s previous structures. The colour and form become occupational, changeable and dependent on the position of the viewer.
Though the digital often cuts out the physical, the proposal looks to redraw a new relationship between the two. Though chance or accident may mostly reside in the physical, through the merging of the two, one may produce a constantly unique digital space. Through their imbrication one creates a digital world directly linked to, and wholly dependent on, the physical.
The stills show the view as one reaches Resolved Perspective 03 (frame 50/100); (top) without conversion; (middle) the first stage of conversion; and (bottom) the final conversion.
Entering the Pavilion, the central frame overlays the live conversions seen through the V3 headset. Flickering, it shows all three stages of conversion, the rendered, the flattened vector image and the final conversion of the gateway structure.
The render has been taken from the street approaching the festival. Looking on, one sees the Gift shop (left); the Gateway Pavilion (middle); the V3 stall (foreground middle); and the exhibit space (right).
The animation strings all 3 principal drawings of the scheme: first the ground floor; then the first floor; and finally, the section.
The animation runs through the central festival scheme. Approaching the festival down Coldharbour Lane, it later moves through the pavilion, then to the café/restaurant, looping back into the exhibit, and finally leaving through the gift shop.
