Reedhouse

Project details

Programme
Unit UG6
Year 2

The starting point of this project was the creation of a separation recording device to compare a walk through a reedbed with a walk along a concrete path in Rainham Marsh. Ideas of first-handedness and the dissolution of a forced mediation between subject and environment were carried into the design of Reedhouse.

The fundamental design idea of this project was to design a well-crafted and open-ended framework of a building that calls for completion by the occupant. In Rainham Marsh, reeds are abundant and even invasive. The use of reeds as roofing and cladding introduces a cyclical character to the structure which calls for continuous reconstruction according to need.

The building houses a workshop for exploring material and vernacular techniques and solutions. The ambition was to create a building that is activated by occupation and which can be continuously justified and reappropriated by its occupation. This constant validation of the structure seeks to ensure the building remains purposeful, enriching the experience of occupants by acting as more of an operable, outward-looking tool than an envelope.

Scenes in a Reedhouse

Scenes in a Reedhouse

A film exploring the character of the building across different times of day and exterior conditions.

Separation recording device (Second Prototype)

An early prototype for a device designed to record the separation of two walkers with respect to time as one travels along a straight concrete path, and another finds their way through a reedbed.

Selection of Material Tests

Selection of Material Tests

Reed and glass material tests were produced over the course of this project. These serve as elaborations on the theme of instruments mediating and rationalising an organic material with natural tendencies to facilitate incorporation into a whole.

Principal Plan

The workshop and communal spaces sit in the clearing (flanked by the concrete path and the reedbed), while the studios sit in the isolation of the reeds. A dock with extendable timber members allows for individual studios to be built by occupants.

There sections: a section through the workshop; a perpendicular section through the workshop; and a section through the studio dock.
