The site’s location is the old Shoreditch Station, adjacent to Brick Lane. It will accommodate the Model Railway Club, currently based in Islington, proving them with a new club building with unprecedented accommodation for trainspotters directly over the railways. As a programme building accommodating a community of railway appreciators, the building reflects the ornamentation of the railway stations of industrial England. Through an exploration of the ‘Moresque’, the building aims to appropriately retrofit the old Shoreditch Station, returning the abandoned station to the rails.
The lecture room merges with the floor above through hybridised seating and stairs, providing access to the concourse bar and exhibition areas which are characterised by Moorish window frames and columns.
The timber columns, clad with terracotta panels, integrate facets inspired by railway stations of the industrial age, providing a structural and aesthetic purpose as load-bearing members.
The ornamented façade is present both internally and externally through timber interiors and terracotta exteriors, allowing views of passing trains from the accommodation towers.
The design follows the concourse patterns of existing and old railway stations, hence mirroring the longitudinal nature of the adjacent railways.
