Bhangra is the traditional folk dance of Punjab, originating through the movement created during farm labour. People from Punjab migrated to Britain often to work in steel factories, resulting in the fusion known as British Bhangra. This project proposes a dance studio and performance theatre situated in Birmingham City Centre. Through exploration of history, aesthetics and traditional Punjabi Folk dance, architectural elements have been re-imagined and designed to support and encourage participation during performances and lessons. Dance is taught through three methods: visual, kinaesthetic and aural analytical. These three methods are conveyed through the architecture of the building. The building is, therefore, a teacher of Bhangra and Punjabi culture itself. The design learns from Bhangra choreography and explores how this can be translated into everyday movements through a building for both beginners and professionals.
Exploring the importance and significance of the clothing worn by Bhangra dancers.
Designing the spaces with the dance and the building users in mind.

Creating a space in which the public are encouraged to dance and join in.
