A Wild Celebration is a rehabilitation centre for juvenile offenders, disguised as an art school. Located in central Rome, the school is partly built by the children, who use soft materials that don’t require sharp or dangerous tools to work with. The process of building becomes the driving force for cooperation, enhancing sociality and friendship. Gardening, basketry, the making of picture book art, the tending of the building’s green spaces and encouragement of imagination through making are the key activities that encourage this self-driven rehabilitation. The school’s schedule consists of both traditional subjects, such as physics or literature, but also more unusual things, such as the preparation for the Spring festival, which would take place at the end of May, when Rome’s weather is usually mild and sunny. During the festival, children celebrate the coming of Spring by dressing up as characters from local fairy tales and helping to construct the building using natural materials such as bamboo, rammed earth, paper and flowers.
