The Academia of Fresco Painting is a project situated in Rome’s Sant’ Eustachio district, which includes the remnants of a 16th-century building and is surrounded by historical buildings, sculptures and paintings. Bringing together interests in architectural history and fresco painting into this project’s methodology, the building proposal is for a fresco painting academia. It consists of a fresco studio, a pigment lab, a library and a conservation room, encouraging conversation between architecture, painting, history and theory. The academia will host yearly residencies and be inhabited by professional artists, architects and students. The building consists of sculptural frames, light fittings and frescoes, emphasising the role of detail, colour, light and proximity. The architectural digital models include frescos made using Renaissance colours, exploring ways in which colour and architecture can frame space.
