Fields, Factories and Workshops in a Modern City: Walworth Yard

Project details

Programme
Unit UG1
Year 2

Inspired by the cottage industries that once occupied backyards and mews, the project seeks to reinvigorate a skilled and self-reliant labour force, mainly focusing on timber craft. The building project uses craft, both physically and metaphorically, to speak about wider social issues such as empowerment, law and the environment. Retaining and responding to existing building fabric on a constrained site, the project carves out a new public courtyard and orientates a communal dining hall in relation to a nearby churchyard, promoting a dialogue about local forestry and material resources. The form and detailing of the bent timber façade demonstrate both the technical skill of craft and the versatility of British timber species.
