Shoreditch Urban Greenhouse

Project details

Programme
Unit PG22
Year 4

Shoreditch Urban Greenhouse takes inspiration from the study of traditional English gardens and greenhouses, reimagining London's recycling system and city farm conditions. Repurposing the historic Shoreditch Goodsyard, it creates a sustainable space for community engagement, urban agriculture and environmental consciousness. The project integrates the site's historical significance and existing structure with modern sustainability practices, using recycled materials for construction to highlight circular economy principles.

Beyond traditional sustainability approaches, it incorporates an online and offline synchronized system. A dedicated app empowers residents to access recycling information, participate in city farm activities, and contribute to composting. This integration enhances the user experience, fostering active engagement and promoting environmental responsibility and social interaction.

As an inspiring model for urban revitalisation and community-driven projects, it transforms underutilised spaces into thriving, environmentally conscious community hubs and serves as a gathering place where people learn, cultivate relationships, and actively practice sustainability,

Friendship Pavilion

Inspired by traditional English gardens, the steel structure's lightness and refinement, along with the transparency of glass, form a boundless yet canopied space that invites gathering and socialising.

From Domestic to Urban Community

The project's story begins with promoting voluntary recycling and composting of organic waste for urban agriculture. Shoreditch Urban Greenhouse fosters learning, relationships, and celebrates sustainability achievements as a vibrant gathering place.

Interactive Sustainable Façade Construction

The façade design also emphasises interactivity and flexibility. There is not only the openness between the interior space and exterior landscape, but also the social interactivity when people spend time here, either inside or outside.

Ecology of Vertical Farm

Shoreditch urban greenhouse transforms the discarded station into a showcase of healthy plant-based food futures and the community’s effort to actively recycle.

Not Just Shoreditch but the Whole City

The overall view showcases the compelling integration of history, sustainability, and technology to cultivate spaces that enhance the community and promote a culture of environmental stewardship.
