The Floating Farm examines London’s food supply chain, exploring the research discovery that many areas adjacent to the city centre are fresh produce deserts. This project imagines a London that is addressing this problem by encouraging local farming, utilising small areas among neighbourhoods to increase acessibility to fresh fruit and vegetables.
Within the existing low-density development, the farm also serves as a centre for local residents to meet and socialise. The farm is designed to be carbon- neutral, aiming to build a sustainable community in which organic waste recycling systems and green energy are incorporated. New agricultural practices are adopted, and the well-being of animals and the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle are being explored.
As a powerful response to the status quo of food production, the project gives voice to underdeveloped communities in London that may become self-sufficient in the future. It explores whether community farming can be utilised as a radical means of reclaiming the power of sustainable development, which rightfully belongs to the community.
This masterplan view showcases the farm's aspirations, serving as a pilot project for other riverfront and brownfield sites in London.
