Timber Tinkerland: A Building Frame for Children’s Imaginative Ideas

Project details

Programme
Unit PG22
Year 4

Timber Tinkerland attempts to revive street play and give children ownership of their urban surroundings in Wanstead. The Timber Tinkerland Primary school achieves this through Montessori and Tinkering pedagogies.

The school’s physical boundaries are a catalyst for social interactions in the neighbourhood at all times of the day and the year. The fence and façade’s adaptable designs provide varied ways of playing for different ages. The toy clamps, toy tiles and fabrics crafted by the children can be attached to the school structure to create more opportunities for play and expand the architectural form of the school.

When children first begin the school year, they are inducted by having to make their own chairs. The children keep the chairs during the year and adapt them as they progress through the educational stages.

To mark the end of each school term, the school children perform community performances in the school street theatre as a way of sharing what they learned with the neighbourhood.

Through this communal educational approach, Timber Tinkerland hopes to inspire other schools to make their surroundings more pedestrian friendly.

A 1:15 model of school sewing and workshop classrooms where children sew costumes, make chairs and theatre sets for their plays. The model captures the diverse ways the children can interact with the structure using the tiles, clamps and fabrics.

Nostalgic Postcards Capturing the Friendly School Environment

These views feature the sports hall, the playful school fence and tiles, the school street theatre and gate, the sensory garden and school playground, the communal fold-down outdoor dining area and the library tower’s inhabitable staircase.

Masterplan and a Zoomed in Section

The masterplan highlights the layout of the spaces around the site and how the interactive classrooms are closer to the street to invite people in after school hours. The section cuts through the wood workshop, the sewing classroom and the library.

Fragments of Friendly Columns

These adaptable fragments create opportunities for socialising, playing and learning in different ways and spaces. They work as a set that can be applied to other buildings in the city to revive pedestrians’ rights to the streets.
