The Kitchenless Estate of Friendship envisions a new approach to housing estates in Hong Kong that foster social connections through shared meals and collaborative household tasks. By implementing three interventions within the estate—reforming the wet market, reorganising domestic spaces, and activating the twin tower courtyards—the project embraces the "kitchenless" ideology. This ideology not only cultivates stronger bonds within the community but also enhances residents' quality of life by reintroducing authentic Cantonese home cooking into the routines of our fast-paced generation.
Moreover, the "kitchenless" proposition expands the notion of communal spaces in urban environments. Domestic spaces have been predominantly associated with women's work and domestic labour is often taken for granted. As a matter of justice, this proposal aims to celebrate the role of women in public.
Through collaborative efforts, the project blurs the boundaries between users, transforming everyone into essential contributors to the estate's food system. This collaborative movement not only nurtures friendships but also shapes a city where neighbours within a community can thrive together.
