The Paper Sail aims to design a new form of urbanism of friendship in the context of Scampia, a northern district of Naples. The design proposes a facility which redefines the social dynamics in a context that since the 1960s has been influenced by the hierarchical system of the Camorra.
The building design of the Paper Sail aims to re-purpose the empty lot of the knocked-down residential housing of the Vela Verde (green sail) by exploiting paper construction in the envelope of the building, and by re-purposing the Construction Demolition Waste (CDW) on-site.
The proposal of The Paper Sail introduces an innovative element of design: pulp paper. The facility structure focuses on the use of pulp paper in the façade along with the integration of CDW in it.
The Paper Sail not only introduces the element of paper into its structural envelope, but it also introduces it within its programme; the facility aims to propose a paper recycling facility, a newspaper publishing space, and paper artists’ residency and exhibition space with the final aim of holistically promoting an architecture of care for the residents of the area.
