Reframing Florence is an exploration into the tools and technologies required for the implementation of eye-tracking in architecture. Utilising a bespoke, DIY eye-tracking headset, a suite of scripts and architectural interventions was composed to facilitate this integration. A collaboration between the eye and the architect.

The primary application of the eye-tracking was a fixation capture system. Allowing a user to explore a context and generate new architectures by re-composing captured perspectives witnessed through the users’ gaze. These new architectures thus remain contextually sensitive to a vernacular yet are unique to a user. By exploiting the limitations of human vision and perspective, the project emphasises the significance of the captured moment, not just in its physical intrigue, but also the importance of the values that make the capture unique, such as the view distance, angle, and duration.

To test and apply these technologies, a frame-making and restoration facility in Florence was proposed on a site located outside the city walls. The project serves the many galleries in Florence and seeking to educate new artisans through an on-site apprenticeship program.

The Eye-Tracking Headset

The Eye-Tracking Headset

In order to study and quantify the nature of the gaze, a bespoke eye-tracking headset was designed and built.

The Fixation Capture System

The Fixation Capture System

A system was developed wherein a user’s real time 3D eye-tracking data could be used to capture fragments of a source geometry identified for a viewing, based on their fixations.

Recomposing the Captured Fragments

Fragments from the viewings are recomposed through an analysis of the site to form new architectures sensitive to Florence’s protected vernacular.

A frame restoration facility constructed to serve the many museums of Florence acts as a test ground for these technologies. The unoccupied space on the site serves as new public gardens.
