The Research and Rehearsal Library for the Dyslexic Arts contains a growing educational facility for studying painting, sculpture, and architecture. Students analyse curated collections that follow a dyslexic analogy, learning to replicate the techniques of pioneering creatives through experimenting with dyslexic thinking to drive new forms of research. The library’s collection expands with student’s work, creating a dynamic interplay between artworks and the architecture.
The building, which emulates Black Mountain College’s ethos, is situated in the Kent village of Ash, promoting creativity in isolation. Set in the 1960s, the library establishes an educational blueprint for neurodiverse brains. Dyslexic students often demonstrate natural creative ability with a strong awareness of three dimensionality.
Dyslexia can be a compelling gift for spatial imagination, offering a three-dimensional acuity that allows someone to view from one perspective while simultaneously conceptualising multiple views. The project explores how dyslexic spatial thinking, the power of visualisation and control of the mind’s eye can be used as an architectural design tool.
The panorama shows multiple views of ever-changing spaces and their temporal nature. This architectural visualisation acts in the same way that one would walk around a space, revealing angles and perspectives that are truer to real life experiences.

A hidden entrance gives access to the mountainous exterior, where students can be found using the façades as a canvas for painting. This creates parallels from the building's origin to the buildings finish.
A symptom for dyslexia is not being able to drown out background noise and hearing all sounds at the same volume. The architecture plays on the fact that small sounds within a library are massively amplified, like the drop of a pen.
