The Metamorphosis of St Luke’s; Resplendence, Ruination, Renaissance

Project details

Programme
Unit PG12
Year 5

Initially set in 1963, The Metamorphosis of St Luke’s imagines a non-denominational place of worship on the banks of the Thames at Gravesend for the resident congregation, and to provide the floating congregation docked nearby a temporary home for their faith. Furthermore, aiming to create a transitional space for those passengers disembarking their buoyant home for a life in the UK, and aiming to bridge potentially disparate cultures literally and metaphorically.

A decline in religious pursuits of the general population and the stark drop in passengers passing through Gravesend led to the closure of the building in the late 1970s. What followed in the next 50 years left the building on the cusp of demolition. Vandalism, theft, arson and weathering had left the building in ruin.

In the mid 2010s, the site was marked for educational use in the regeneration plan and it was at this point that St Luke’s School of Fine Art was created. The aim here was to ensure that the students very much had a hand in the restoration and regeneration of the building itself, notably creating a sculpture of sorts by replacing the vines and moss with a plethora of marbles.

Chiaroscuro and the Inner Sanctum

Chiaroscuro and the Inner Sanctum

A cavernous space of concrete, chalk, and chiaroscuro. Here the inner sanctum of St Luke’s is unveiled, a space of quiet contemplation bathed in a borrowed light. Serene pools reflect the light which helps to saturate the space with luminescence.

Marbleous Moss, 2023-00

The restoration of St Luke’s has begun and the transformation from verdant ruin to ever evolving student installation has begun. An exhibition of marble encrusted splendour with each piece of vegetation replaced with a piece of stone.

The Final Days of St Luke’s, 1978- 04

Here, the last remaining clergy walk through the vast spaces of a building no longer needed. The image aims to highlight the central tower/dome of St Luke’s and the light quality experienced at its base.

Chiaroscuro in Blue [Light]

What remains, St Luke’s in Ruin, 1995- 05

Years of decay, arson, and theft. All that remains is a shell of its former glory. However, there is a strange beauty to the ruin of St Luke’s, becoming like a ruinous painting that will soon be studied within its walls.
