Unearthing Bishopsgate Goodsyard questions the potential of neglected brownfield sites to be reimagined as spaces for social regeneration and heritage preservation. It emphasises the importance of building craft and material strategies in protecting these sites from inappropriate development and the marginalisation of communities. Through thoughtful design that serves the local community, this project aims to enhance local character and preserve the memory of the site.
The drawing showcases the integration of community spaces with 18th-century cottages, preserving and enhancing the site's character.
In providing spaces for local craftspeople to work and teach, the community is revived away from new developments and high rises. The view from beneath the railway, overlooking the orchard, provides a sense of peace and respite.
The new intervention integrates with a disused brownfield site, creating fluid spaces that cater to the community's needs and aspirations. The project adapts to changes in the surrounding environment, offering diverse spatial possibilities.
Through model-making, an explorative strategy has been implemented to adapt and enhance the existing disused structures, giving the site a new life and protecting it from inappropriate development.
Alongside the design research project, a chair was designed and created at a 1:1 scale to explore how demountable joinery and woodworking methods can provide a framework for design that focuses on maintenance and repair.
