This design research challenges the notion of efficiency and standardisation in apartment buildings, focusing on the semi-public spaces like corridors and staircases. These areas are often minimised and lack opportunities for activities. The study takes place in the Battersea Power Station development area, where mixed-use buildings are planned. It explores a building design that offers a wandering experience, balancing order and freedom, and allowing residents to follow a prescribed path or discover their own. The building includes different types of flats to accommodate various lifestyles. Additionally, Walk-up Village considers sustainable practices by reusing building materials from the planned removal of the waste transfer station, providing insight into handling demolition in new development areas.

Shared Unit Prototype

This shared unit offers ensuite rooms, a shared kitchen and a small courtyard. The connecting spaces, including staircases, encourage interactions among residents.

Interior Experience

The model utilises light patterns to create a rhythmic effect, guiding wandering paths in various directions. It suggests potential routes while allowing individuals the freedom to choose, embodying the concept of wandering.

Semi-Public Space Prototype

The digital model features diverse staircases for varied activities and rhythms. Renders exhibit a mix of openness, closure, and moments of hiding and exposing. It encourages wandering across different levels.

Wandering Experience

This axonometric view showcases the semi-public space across multiple floors, encouraging both movement and relaxation within residential buildings. It consists of quick-passing areas and inviting connecting spaces.

Entrance

The ground floor of residential buildings serves as public spaces, blending nature and man-made elements for community interaction.
