Liminal Dialogues

Project details

Programme
Studio Studio 3A
Year 3

The project explores liminality as a tool for fostering nuanced human dialogues. Oakley Square Gardens, a site divided by boundaries, serves as the backdrop for this exploration. By employing thresholds that manipulate sight and sound, this project creates a music centre that transforms the fixed barrier of the garden into a porous and democratic boundary. This allows the community members to actively engage with and develop the site, turning it into a facilitator of connections and dialogues within and beyond the neighbourhood.

A Rehearsal, A Performance, A Festival

A Rehearsal, A Performance, A Festival

The final narrative film explores the building's transformation from a private rehearsal space to a stage for a community music festival. From intimacy to solitude, the project aims to provide methods of dialogue for all.

Layering Liminality

Layering Liminality

In the video, the layers of thresholds both connect and conceal the two people at each end, as they reach out from their private existence. As they navigate through the layers, they learn more about each other.

The Catalogue of Interfaces

A collection of flexible thresholds, varying in size and material, manipulate sight and sound to create diverse acoustic and visual conditions.

Liminal Assemblies

A series of building assemblies has been created based on the interface catalogue. The five distinct assemblies represent different tendencies in their relationship with the musicians and the site.

The Sampler

The sampler is a device that assists community members in envisioning the acoustic and visual conditions that the music centre could provide. Each page contains a threshold element, offering diverse language for people's dialogue.
