Project details

Programme

Year 2

The project engages with digitisation and nature conservation as paradoxical approaches to sustainability. Digital transformation of industries reduces costs and emissions but comes with material and energy concerns. Urban rewilding initiatives prioritise humans, overlooking systemic threats to biodiversity.

Channelsea Island, once a chemical wasteland, has overcome decades of environmental abuse and become an urban ecosystem. Inaccessible to humans, it offers insights for redefining 'nature' from a multispecies perspective.

The architecture comprises satellite islets, embodying a self-sustaining system. The main building houses a 3D visualisation studio, a 360 dome cinema and a restaurant. This programme is fuelled by a solar powered algae microfarm. Algae gel runs along grooves on the eastern façade arches to enable bioremediation of the surrounding area. Along Abbey Creek, a water-cooled data storage facility doubles as a footpath and pollinator trail.
