The food hub fosters safe multi-generational interactions and strengthens Hanwell's culture of allotments, community gardens and orchards. The spaces in the food hub become a theatre, providing visitors with a cinematic experience and emphasising the sensory aspects of culinary experiences.
Three key aspects have shaped the project: the site's unique interpretation and contextual analysis, the social nature of the program and the commitment to environmentally conscious design. Considering Hanwell's strong sense of community, it is crucial to construct a facility that aligns with its identity and supports Ealing's aim to become a carbon-neutral borough and organisation by 2030.
The video immerses the audience in the site, exploring its diverse elements and journeys. It captures the beauty of the site's chaotic nature, showcasing a variety of views and perspectives on the interaction between nature and the synthetic.
The upper floor of the food hub resembles an opera house, with an experimental kitchen as a performance space and dining areas for the visitors.
The lower floor of the food hub serves as a backstage and planning area, with pantry rooms, an informal dining hall and kitchens. The learning kitchen provides an opportunity for people to learn about different cuisines and acquire new skills.
Hanwell Food Hub is a multicultural and intergenerational community centre that celebrates food. The landscaping showcases native wildflowers found along canals.
People from Hanwell gather at the breakfast club, where chefs freshly prepare food in the kitchen and at the patio. The grill and pizza oven at the back utilise leftover timber and sawdust (pallets) from the construction of the food hub.
