Barcelona's Markets Reimagined

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 4
Year 4

This adaptive reuse project transforms the space between the existing buildings in the former Can Ricart industrial complex into a marketplace. To embody the sense of transience, a stall-for-rent system is adapted to mimic the dynamics of a street market. This flexible arrangement is extended to stall design, where vendors and customers share the same side of the stall to nurture interpersonal connections and interactions.

Inspired by the various urban shading devices scattered throughout Barcelona, a single continuous roof is developed as an inverted tensile form. Locations of side supports echo the corners of existing buildings, featuring exposed semi-circular ground interfaces, each of which forms its own miniature garden within the market expanse. The gardens function as the heart for the respective market activities, and simultaneously, beacons guiding customers to explore the market. The existing structures and the ground-adjacent portions of the continuous roof, in conjunction with market stalls are designed from sectional profiles of a variety of market functions and human resting postures. They form a labyrinth that encourages a leisurely journey throughout the market.

Exploded Axonometric

An exploded axonometric view reveals the stalls under the continuous roof, demonstrating the spatial relationship between the market stalls and existing structures, alongside the potential lighting dynamics through the windows and frames.

Perspective View

A perspective view from the miscellaneous section garden to the entrance reveals the interplay between light and shadows, showing how people occupy the space and drawing contrast between the brightness of the garden and shaded market area.

Perspective View

The position and shape of the fruit and vegetables stalls mirror the garden's relationship with boundary of the existing structure, forming a circular arrangement which guides the visitors along a path that encircles the central garden.

Perspective View

In the miscellaneous sector, stalls feature offsets at its display surfaces, providing areas for versatile merchandise display while making use of spaces underneath for temporary storage.

Market Section

Section view across the lengths of the site displays the continuous roof subtly surmounting existing structures, with ground-adjacent portions serving as devices for stalls to lean upon, illustrating the balance of various considerations.
