Can Ricart Dressmakers District celebrates the history of the site as a major centre of textile production in Barcelona during the 19th century. Ruins on the site are retrofitted into a textile factory integrated in a neighbourhood of dressmakers, markets, and workshops. The proposal uplifts skilled crafts people in the Catalan textile industry that positively contribute to local culture and require affordable housing that would not be typically available.
Designing for the year 2080, ideas of future domesticity are explored. With predictions of warmer winters and hotter summers, the project interrogates and defines inherited boundaries between outdoor and indoor spaces. Enriching small apartment living and maximising passive design strategies for comfort.
The proposal emphasises sustainable and ethical living, considering future climate predictions and the environmental issues surrounding fast fashion. The proposal introduces a circular economy of textiles in which donated clothes are recycled and woven into fabrics to create new pieces of clothing and textiles. This activity provides jobs to boost the local economy and revitalise Barcelona’s rich textile heritage.
