Hackney’s Dancing Mice

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 3
Year 3

It’s the year 2033 and Hackney Wick has been swallowed by the bleak, unaffordable, cheerless constructions of property developers… Well, not entirely! A small group of indomitable artists still hold out against the invaders. Settled on a little slither of land in Hackney Wick, they’ve made it their mission to celebrate and spread the joy of learning through making, as they work towards their annual act of resistance: a big, loud spectacle floating down the River Lea, to spread havoc and wonder. Across the year, a little shelf was transformed into a travelling theatre that, in the scale of a mouse, allowed to embody the circular economy of the site, and guided design decisions. The student’s own learning through making became representative of the learning of the characters inhabiting the workshop space.

Construction at the Scale of One Model Maker

Construction at the Scale of One Model Maker

Through staging the construction of the design at the scale of the model, the knowledge gained could be brought back into the scale of the building.

Ground Floor Plan

The design of the main workshop assembly room and all its supporting spaces (storage, junkshop, woodshop) fell into place once the material flows surrounding the building were understood.

Section

The journey of materials and people is illustrated from junkshop to façade in this long section cutting through the key spaces of the building.

A Flexible Shading System

Development of a growing double façade adaptable to annual climate fluctuations.

What Curiosities Lie at the Bottom of the Lea River?

The beginnings of a growing architecture; the theatrics of reclaiming the forgotten things at the bottom of the River Lea and their reinsertion into a building fabric.
