Milestone

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 3
Year 3

Plants are no less complex than animals or humans, but they are under-researched in comparison. This project looks to connect scientists and visitors with flora above fauna and reintroduces the importance of imagination in science. Milestone is suggestive of the past as well as the future and moves with the ever-changing climate. Fragments of brick from previous buildings on site are incorporated into façades and paths. The materials used stem from a back-to-origins philosophy using local timber and limestone, finished with as few manufacturing processes as possible. The site includes a variety of habitats under different levels of control, with some areas wilder than others. Research residencies provide space for visiting scientists to stay and learn within wild areas, studying the relationship between humans and plants in urban rewilding. Trees grow to replace shading louvres and aspects of decay and re-use are considered through a plant waste energy system to generate electricity on site. The proposal borrows materials from the land, reveals its structure and uses screw piles to cause little disturbance to tree roots.

Scientist Study

A reading spot that looks out onto the garden. The window frame is large and allows you to sit right up close to the glass. Display boxes illuminate biological findings or models.

Ground Floor Plan

Section

Twenty years post construction – the ground floor will be left alone, allowing nature to reclaim the space, becoming an example of rewilding for observations.

Windowsill and Gutter Model

Rainwater is controlled via a time-based process. After ten years upon the erosion of a stone element hidden in its drainage channel, the water flow direction changes.

Controlled Plant Research Area

A rainy afternoon six months after construction. The first mosses have started to grow around the site.
