DIY Energy: Reimagining Domesticity through Craft

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 2
Year 4

Adjacent to a former gasworks site, an alternative narrative is imagined in which living and energy systems are decentralised. Small-scale industry is integrated with the domestic to create a shared infrastructure. The project explores how the individual can be empowered through the creativity of adapting and inventing playful ways to utilise energies produced in domestic spaces. From the heat of bath water to warm the bed, to the foot pressure on the stairs generating light in the hallway, novel relational ideas are crafted through hypperrealisations of heat transfers to heat bodies rather than spaces. A DIY approach is proposed as a way to seed ideas in the community, to generate a new value system through which homes can become more productive.

A Productive Landscape

The realised scheme of a decentralised community, one which has achieved net-zero carbon with surplus energy shared between the homes. Communal workshops and buildings facilitate the expansion of the scheme.

Reimagining Domesticity

Reimagining Domesticity

The initial planning stages of the project are documented through drawings and designs of plug-in DIY elements such as the ‘sink-seat’ and ‘bed-bath’ that conserve heat and water within a closed system.

The ‘Oddball’ House

The Oddball house acts as the seed for the shift in the community, consisting of idiosyncratic crafted elements that reflect, and conserve radiated heat and household energy transfers.

Resolution through Fragments

Resolution through Fragments

The communal building relationships are resolved through fragments and sections through the workshop, distillery, and laundromat.

A Late Night at the Workshop

The main workshop space, in which a plug-in sink-seat element is being constructed, becomes a testing ground for the new elements and ideas before they are implemented in a domestic setting.
