Zorrotzaurre Gate is a project about creating a place on the island that facilitates the dialogue between people and the movement between places, at a time when water level rise is increasingly threatening.
The Island of Zorrotzaurre is undergoing a transformation. It is, however, not up to the people living on the island what direction the regeneration will take. Namely, despite pushbacks on the Zaha Hadid Masterplan, the voices of the residents are not being listened to. As unwanted developments take place and new dwellers move into their island homes, conflicts are inevitable. This project proposes a different direction on the way the island should be redeveloped while aiming to ease any social tensions. To do this, the themes of mobility, accessibility, and community are explored.
The project serves as a point of connection, both for sustainable transport by providing infrastructure and facilities, and a point of connection between the people on the island through the public spaces: the assembly space for civil discussion, the workshop spaces for the making of one’s own mobility contraption, as well as the exhibition spaces for inspiration and learning.
