The Calthorpe Structure

Project details

Programme
Year 3

This project aims to explore the introduction of ambiguous metal forms as an inter-generational object, fostering play and community engagement. The installation is situated within the Calthorpe Community Garden, which brings together diverse communities from various backgrounds and ages in King's Cross. To better understand the garden's dynamics, multiple visits were made, active participation in garden meetings took place, and interviews were conducted with community members. These interactions revealed the multitude of experiences within the garden, which served as inspiration for the design of a metal structure. The structure can be transformed into a bench by adding a deckchair-like sling. The design of the sling was a collaborative process with the community, using quotes from interviews as prompts for individuals to draw from their own experiences.

Hand-drawn map of the Calthorpe

The map is reflective of the time I have spent within the community for the past 3 months and all the small details I have learnt about: from the names of plants to where different objects are located.

Process and Making the Structure

A series of images documenting the process in making the structure.

Close-up of first community engagement session.

The community was called upon to draw the design of the seat cover. I had conducted interviews with members of the community, from which I had drawn out quotes, and used these quotes as prompts for members around the table to draw around.
