In our technologically driven world, it can be easy to lose sight of the human dimension; that magical granularity that gives meaning to life and brings stories into tangible focus. This year, Emilia peeled past the cosmetic and delved into the painful, the difficult and the hidden. They met a diverse array of fascinating people and explored their deepest insecurities. From investigations into the psychology behind fainting, to comprehending the less romantic side of an inspirational architectural figure, Emilia learned more about the elusive cocktail of life, love, and loss that feeds our dreams and our nightmares, our imaginations, and our reality, and often takes up residence in our homes.
The presented project work was undertaken as part of the following modules (in order of appearance): History and Theory of Architecture, Documentary Radio - A Practice-Based Introduction, London Architecture V, Architectural Research III and Design and Creative Practice 3 (compact).
Bungalows A and B were the subject of my essay, ‘Carpets and concrete: East and West in the Modernist Architecture of Berthold Lubetkin between 1928 and 1954’
In this 10-minute radio documentary, Emilia explores her tendency to faint when under exceptional stress. Emilia asks why this happens to her and whether there is any way to stop it.
Visiting numerous museums and galleries around London prompted me to explore the question, ‘How do debates surrounding the repatriation of looted historical artefacts alter the ways in which contemporary audiences view their curation?’.
For this module, I visited three curatorially-distinct museums in London and attempted to memorise them. After analysing my cognitive maps I returned to each of the museums and explored the spaces to discern what pedagogical practices were at play.
This film is the culmination of numerous explorations into the home as political grounds for debate and knowledge dissemination. The film touches on themes of eco-anxiety and the powerlessness often experienced in the face of the Climate Emergency.
