Unit UG14
Year 2

In the 1980s, Belgrade was the capital of the now-forgotten genre of Yugoslavian punk rock. Surrounding the New Belgrade brutalist suburbs emerged a culture of politically charged and frustrated youth under the one-party political state. Now, the population has a longing and nostalgia for their youth and community spirit.

The punk-inspired youth music and cultural centre is a performing and practice space with a procedural design based on the famous anti-war song Slusaj Vamo by RimTutiTuki. The song provides the framework for the design, the outcome of which is a space that celebrates acoustic variation, social collaboration and a politically out-spoken community spirit. The centre is situated underneath the bridge between Old and New Belgrade, Branko’s Bridge. The space uses and revitalises the abandoned buildings underneath the bridge and celebrates the temporal nature of music and culture.

The exoskeleton-geodesic practice pods are dispersed to allow space for future cultural amenities. The aim is for the architecture to be gratified and tampered with, building a timeline of culture into the future, with roots in the Yugonostalgia for the punk rock 80s.
