Serbia's relationship with the European Union (EU) has frayed in recent years. The decision to not impose sanctions on Russia, along with the country’s contentious relationship with Kosovo, has weakened the bond between Serbia and the EU. This intervention seeks to create more open discussion between Serbia and the EU through the creation of a debating chamber and bathhouse. The structure is occupied by both public and political representatives.
The main aims are twofold; First, to create a space where EU and Serbian politicians can meet to discuss Serbia's future within the EU. Second, for this space to function as a reminder to politicians of the duty of care they have towards their constituents.
The structure occupies the space underneath a geographically and politically important bridge across the Sava River in Belgrade. It partially inhabits a Byzantine/Romanesque pre-existing sandstone structure that was once a support for the old bridge that previously sat on the site. The bridge itself acts as a nexus point, currently straddling the Balkans and Central Europe as well as historically being the threshold between Austro-Hungary and Serbia.
North-facing elevation. The painterly style echoes the romantic nature of the intervention and programme.
