Redesigning chicken farming for a sustainable future.
Mudchute Park and Farm is an urban farm in the Isle of Dogs. To this day it remains a working farm with an assortment of animals and livestock. The main protagonists in this project are chicken, with the aim to make chicken farming far more sustainable. This is achieved through the use of black soldier flies (BSF). BSF larvae will provide over half of a chicken’s diet, reducing the importation of large quantities of corn and soy, as well as reducing the waste produced by the farm. The BSF can also be turned into biodiesel for use on the farm, creating a sustainable farm environment. This building itself acts as an education and welcome centre, allowing those who live in the city to experience farm life. Classrooms, restaurants, visitor facilities and farm animals encourage learning and engagement with agriculture and farming, bringing agriculture back into the city.
