Formosity

Project details

Programme
Unit UG13
Year 2

Formosity is a hikers’ retreat and fish farm situated in a remote part of the Black Forest in Germany. The vernacular design is inspired by the unspoiled beauty of the nearby glacial waters of the Black Eye.

The project seeks to enhance the hiker’s experience by capturing the essence of nature, using only found materials from the site and respecting the forest’s canvas by not damaging or eroding the environment. The glacial water acts as a foundation for the kitchen to bring a forest to table dining from menus of foraged ingredients, such as fish and mussels unique to the lake, as well as foraged mushrooms and herbs found in the forest.

Models

Large overhanging roofs provides shelter all year round, while the restaurant retreats to the protective environment of the drystone walls. Three pools close to the nearby stream provide the habitat for the Arctic char.

Section and Ground Floor Plan

Thick drystone walls collected from the site make up the base of the building. Different paths of water travel through to feed the Arctic char farm. The wood-fired stone furnace traverses through each floor, providing heat throughout.
