The Chinese Medical Centre primarily focuses on health issues brought about by the humid environment of Cley-next-the-Sea.
The building is located within the community zone on the east side of the settlement. Accessed via a bridge from the public town square the building unfolds into the reeds of the salt marshes with increasing privacy.
In an environment with an average humidity level of 80%, the design, through architectural skins, stacking and associations, manipulates these existing conditions to create three treatment rooms with varying humidity and temperature levels to administer five different treatments. Light-weight architectural appendages reach out into the environment beyond from a heavy, earthen courtyard core.
The centre creates a functional and comfortable environment that reflects the treatment processes, mirroring the interaction between the human body and medical instruments. As a result, visitors undergo Chinese medicine treatments whilst experiencing the architectural embodiment of Chinese medical theory.
