A new Mediateca (media library) in San Lorenzo brings together the disparate creative and digital faculties of the University of Rome under one roof. Lively with the mix of transient students, researchers and visiting academics, the building is a reinterpretation of the ancient Forum, thrumming with debate and ideas.
In the heart of the university and transport centre, the Mediateca has the ability to transport tourists and intellectuals alike into the unseen and unknown, connecting ancient history to local sub-cultures, and local to global.
The Mediateca's gallery spaces, dark rooms and archives reuse the historical grounds and are programmed by the solar clock, dissolving the rigid boundaries between the private, institutional research spaces and public cafes.
The travertine façade not only mirrors the Aurelian wall as a predictive history, but it also shows the shadows of the actors within the "wall", serving as a screen for this modern age.
