The Bristol Institute of Ceramics

Project details

Programme
Unit UG8
Year 3

A ceramic crafts centre fills a long-abandoned site in the historic narrow quay of Bristol’s city centre. The project responds to the decline of local craft by retaining, broadening and sharing ceramics expertise with both the local population and visitors.

The site is embedded in Bristol’s historic industrial landscape, which was carved through the city as a by-product of Bristol Harbour. The project aims to confront the decline of Bristol’s local trade skills and craftsmanship.

The Ceramics Institute establishes a space where Bristolians and visitors are able to converse, explore, refine and experiment with ceramics while providing connections between the ceramic novice and the experienced.

The journey guides novice ceramicists through four key learning and project development stages, where, at the end of the journey, the ceramicist will become an expert in a particular field of ceramics.

Users will document, share and disseminate their knowledge with others, forming a vital role in their personal journey. The project aims to form a growing and evolving knowledge base of ceramics to preserve craft skills for the future of Bristol.
