Due to the post-pandemic rise in online shopping, traditional shopping centres are becoming obsolete. This proposal suggests repurposing a shopping centre into a school of textiles, aiming to address over-consumption and promote community involvement. The school will serve as a learning environment for both students and the wider community, incorporating local creatives and textile crafts. The building itself will be ever-changing, with students repairing and replacing broken pieces over time. Users will actively participate, mending breakages and creating an interactive and experimental space that celebrates maintenance and repair. The exhibition space will showcase unique textile materials like tufting, fabric construction, crochet, knitting and quilting. This new hub will present textile-based architecture and demonstrate the possibilities of constructing with fabric.
Part of the school's mandate is to bring to life the creative atmosphere of Hastings. Every year the school will produce a collective costume as part of Hastings' many festivals.
