Imprinting Identity

Project details

Programme
Unit UG5
Year 3

Inspired by convalescence as a liminal period of uncertainty, a derelict hospital becomes a residency that aids the journey of one’s loss of identity due to the rapid transformation of Hastings. A sensory experience encompassing light and olfaction explores how a fragmented sense of identity can be restored. Drawing on the process of creating a social identity through categorisation, identification, and comparison, the environment seeks to encourage the formation of a collective identity within Hastings. Furthermore, the once monstered Tamarisk plant is revived and embedded within the building fabric, manifesting itself as an allegory for newfound unity.

Regaining Identity: The last step

The last step to regaining identity is to be reintroduced to society in the main hall. The environment seeks to encourage the formation of a collective identity within Hastings.

Regaining Identity: The Second Step

The second step is the solitude of the tamarisk walk towards the library.

Long Section: Hero drawing

Hero drawing: Inspired by convalescence as a liminal period of uncertainty, a derelict hospital becomes a residency that aids with the journey of one’s loss of identity due to the rapid transformation of Hastings.

Drawing Responding to 'Housing is a Human Right' (Euan Roberts)

Each student started with an image or drawing from the selection provided by the brief. Some of the drawings had strong links to Hastings, our site, others were more universal.
