Services for women who have experienced domestic violence are chronically underfunded or simply do not exist in many parts of the UK. As a result of the country’s housing crisis, any type of emergency or social dwelling is harder to find than ever before. This project tackles one aspect of the housing crisis by providing an example of a high-quality refuge for the victims of abuse. The focus of the building’s programme emphasises the importance of well-being and a safe environment in the process of recovery. These aims are supported by water therapy and direct contact with nature within the building.
