Futuristic Bioplastic Cup Factory & Cafe

Project details

Programme
Unit UG4
Year 3

The Futuristic Bioplastic Cup Factory & Café is a project that combines knowledge of bioplastic materials in architecture with the daily lives of those living and working around Tottenham Court Road. The project’s main aim is to combat one of London's most pressing issues, overheating. Endeavouring to help reduce the impact of climate catastrophe, a future-oriented café is developed, along with a bioplastic cup factory. The location, near University College London, was selected to target a younger audience and influence their ability to rethink future design approaches.

This project was conceived as a celebration of sustainability. Bioplastic is celebrated externally through the prefabricated bioplastic façade, which also serves to reduce overheating. In addition, the site’s construction uses timber and cantilever supports to minimise its carbon footprint. The factory’s production supports the café, giving visitors an immersive experience of the production line.

Sugarcane Farm

Sugarcane is the source material of bioplastic cups. It is harvested by factory workers and visitors are invited to get involved.

External View

Bioplastic is showcased throughout the building, blending in with cantilevered timber construction.

Internal Café View

The café is designed as a space to use the bioplastic cups and to celebrate the bioplastic façade.

Bioplastic Samples

Using recycled coffee, prefabricated bioplastic sheets are developed.

Perspective Section

The project's purpose is to enhance public knowledge of the use of bioplastic in building construction and cup design while experiencing and celebrating the material's life cycle.
