Electrical lighting and urban development have allowed us to colonise the night, driving out wildlife and astronomers who use the stars to navigate. As a result of society’s unpredictable development, a small astronomical community is now facing insolvency. Set in the site of an abandoned reservoir is the Hampstead Scientific Observatory and six-inch refracting telescope. In consultation with the Hampstead Scientific Society, the extension of an extension will provide a space to monitor light and tackle this contemporary problem.
This entrance view shows the formed earth walls and their openings where birds begin to inhabit the façade.
This image portrays a recorded journey embedded within the cast artefact. The design explores the different ways to capture something fleeting.
The plan of the first floor is layered above the water channels below. This plan shows the connectivity between each space, enabled by the spinal hallway.
As time passes, vegetation is introduced and the water channels continue to degrade and become submerged. Higher points of the formed channels become the habitat for amphibians and more lentic life is introduced.
The perspective section shows the observatory and human life coexisting with the wild. The birds inhabit the roof structure above, while humans and the lentic ecosystem exist below.
