The Mannequin Factory & Theatre brings a unique experience to the deeply historic streets of London Bridge. Inspired by the origins of plastic surgery and the eerie phenomenon of the ‘Uncanny Valley’, the programme gives an insight into the world of mannequin production alongside riveting theatre experiences in the building’s two performance spaces. Visitors are encouraged to climb the ramps that surround the glass factory, providing the chance to witness the creation of mannequins, from the production of the initial maquette to the hand-painted details. At the top of the factory, a theatre occupying the top floors hosts audiences for a surreal mannequin production inspired by puppet shows from around the world. Visitors can then descend to the basement to indulge in the surreal theatre space, heightened by soft interiors that adhere to the site’s visceral and bodily design.
The entrance to the theatre inaugurates the transition between the factory and the theatre experience. The entrance elicits a surreal journey into the performance spaces, drawing from various precedent studies and research.
The journey climbing the Mannequin Factory brings you to two levels of theatre viewing spaces. Performances taking place on the lower level can be viewed from seating around the stage and from above.
The transitional spaces or ‘vessels’ between the factory and the theatre spaces are inspired by the visceral qualities of the body.
Taking inspiration from the original brickwork on site, the prints emulate the weathered qualities of the structure. Through printing, the objective was to see how textures from different surfaces can be drawn out to form a dynamic facade.
